SUMMARY:Selichot: Music\, Stories & Libations
DESCRIPTION:Seeking forgiveness is a communal effort. Judaism is concerned with both our community identity and our individual development. We gather together as a community to start the path of forgiveness. Our inspiration comes from music and stories which stir the soul. The service which starts this process before the High Holidays is called Selichot. \nSelichot means “pardons.” The poems and prayers are designed to help our hearts experience teshuvah\, repentance\, or return (in the sense of returning to God or returning ourselves in the right direction again.) \nRegister on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Opportunities: How the Flood at AME Zion Church is Bringing Us Together
DESCRIPTION:Members of Scotland AME Zion Church have wanted to restore the church founded in 1924 off Seven Locks Road in Potomac for decades. They thought it might be the end in 2019. A flood wiped out the foundation and left the building unusable for services. But three years later\, the congregation is raising money to start the Second Century Project\, restoring the historic church and building a new worship facility on site that will serve the wider community as well. \nThis project is more than the reconstruction of a building. The area around the church\, known as Scotland\, is the cite of a historic African American community. The land was purchased by former slaves\, later share croppers. Title passed down to their families until the 1960s. While Montgomery County developed around them\, Scotland remained without utilities like running water. Economic and governmental forces retitled the land owned by the descendants of those first owners. The Scotland Church alone stands as testament to the determination and dignity of that community. \nThe Second Century Project is a joint effort of Scotland and its neighbors to revitalize and rejuvenate. The church is on the Maryland historical registry site\, so it will be preserved. The project will move the building over onto the parking lot\, do all this landscaping\, fill in the basement\, and raise the ground up 4 feet so it is above Seven Locks Road. \nCome learn more about this community\, its history and its future. As important\, come meet your neighbors. Let us extend our hands to one another forming enduring bonds of friendship. \nNot joining us in person? Zoom here. \n

SUMMARY:The Church in our Backyard
DESCRIPTION:Jodi and I bought our first home in the Inverness Townhouses\, adjacent to Seven Locks Road\, in Potomac.  Next to Inverness is the “Scotland” community\, established when former slaves bought the land in the 19th century. Perhaps you have noticed the small white church near to the intersection of Bells Mill Road. Perhaps you never noticed. \nAs Inverness residents\, we did not know that the development sat above a litttle valley along the road.  The Historic Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is located in that valley. \nIn July of 2019 the foundation of the church suffered extensive damage as a result of a devastating rainstorm.  https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/historic-black-church-in-montgomery-co-remains-damaged-by-summer-flood/2220937/. The flooding was partly caused by the topography of the Inverness development.  This is an example of the ways in which our own advancement has had an impact on others who were disadvantaged. \nThe Church needs $400\,000.  After a year\, they have raised half that amount with a grant of $100\,000 and a GoFund me campaign.  We can help.  I believe we should help. \nImagine how quickly we would respond to rebuild a synagogue that was destroyed.  Aren’t you encouraged to help out our neighbors right here?  Here are my suggestions: Think of how many restaurant meals you haven’t eaten or shows you haven’t seen in the past three months. Then think of what you might donate to rebuild the black community’s church in our own neighborhood. May I suggest a minimum of $100 – the cost of one dinner at Gregorio’s? How about $1\,000 the cost of a weekend theater trip to New York? If you send it to the Jewish Studio\, I will present a single large check to the Church on behalf of this community.  I’ll share your name unless you instruct otherwise. You can pay on our website\, or by check (The Jewish Studio\, 10921 Candlelight Lane\,  Potomac\, Maryland  20854).  I dream big – let’s raise $100\,000! \nThey hope to begin rebuilding in July\, 2020 so please respond today.  One more thing\, if you believe this is worthy of your own investment\, then share this email with someone else who might agree with that sentiment.   If you don’t participate in the Jewish Studio\, perhaps you will share this with your spiritual community or synagogue.  I hope so.
